Thanks for the comments! We are using a Zenoah ZP-20 for this one. Should fit very neatly inside the cowl. More pics soon.

Default Engine Finally Mounted!

Hey everyone, I finally got an hour or two to work on the Taylorcraft. I have to many planes going at once! Anyways, Zenoah Zp-20 is hung on the firewall now, just need to plumb and run linkage:

You'll love the plane. One of my all-time favorites. It would be nice if Hangar Nine did one more production run.....

I've got one of the original DLE 30's in mine. The version with the side-draft carb. I'm running a large prop for a 30; a 20x6 wide blade. Pulls like a mule but doesn't really build up much speed. Low level acrobatics. Tons of fun!

One of Hangar 9's winners! I miss mine (sold it two years ago) I really liked the Bind and Fly version .....simple to assemble and go fly. Plus the Zenoah engine ran like a champ!

After a very untimely return to earth even last summer, the only available replacement air-frame was the Bind and Fly version. Interesting concept for a such a large plane. I transferred all my equipment to the new fuse, including the DLE35RA. What a joy this plane is to fly! I know this plane has been powered by many different engines, but IMHO it is really hard to beat the 35RA combo.

If you have the desire to try something different, please try a 20x6. Master Airscrew sells a wooden version with the tips already painted yellow. The big prop looks great and the vertical performance is terrific. Slows down well for landings as well.

Thanks for the tip, now we just have to wait for the field to thaw out. But we had a good run in 2015, this was Dec 25, Christmas morning shared with my two boys and the T-Craft

I can understand that! I'm not much of a cold weather flyer. 60 degrees is my minimum operating range.

I have a new BNF one that has not been flown yet. My son had one that we flew many times, nice plane. Maybe I'll get mine out this year and maybe not.

Update: Finally got her done!! First maiden flight during the last fleeting light of the day!! And today I got 5 more flights in! So far my opinion: Flies really well, but seems a bit underpowered. I have the Zenoah ZP-20 swinging a 16X6 prop. 9000 rpm. Unable to go over the top on a loop, even if I dive to gain energy first. Inverted flight is a breeze. Landings are rollers! Even dead stick ones. Here's some pics:

Try some different props. Master Airscrew props are durable, but far from the best option. Try Xoar for one. Also, different sizes and pitch.

Well, dang Zenoah 20 is still having reliability issues! Keep starving it somehow. Extended inverted flight resulted in engine failure to dead stick landing. Gusty winds resulted in a downwind landing to stall and cartwheel. Luckily not too damaged! Wingtips need repaired as well as tail group, landing gear. New wheel pants and windshield on the way. I did already replace the tailwheel with an Aeroworks unit that is much more scale and user friendly! Too bad I bent the airframe oh well, We'll have 'er flying again soon!

Sorry for your mishap, get her back in the air as soon as you can. Too pretty not to fly!

BTW, you mentioned that you have a windshield on the way. Where did you find that?

Thank

Thanks, I ordered the windshield from Fiberglass Specialties. I'll post photos when they arrive.

Well guys, I finally got around to repairing my Taylorcraft and have flown it again today! Had to repair tail group, wingtips, and landing gear as well as the windscreen and wheel pants too. Still have to decide how I want to go with the wheel pants. I flew three flights today and had reasonable success. She is still out of CG somehow, (I thoroughly checked before flight) and is taking a huge amount of nose weight. Not sure why as nothing changed from before the incident. Ill get er figured out.

This is my second gas airplane after approx seven flights on a H9 SU26 MM. Wondering about some issues here: airplane is BNF with the included, stock mag-equipped, Zenoah G-26 - looked over some of this thread but lost patience searching - concerned and looking for any advice on securing hairpins for main lift struts. IOW, will they let go from vibration if not safetied somehow? These areas are at the jury struts and where the struts attach to the fuselage. Also wondering if A6000 servos on ailerons are problematic based on other thread complaints. Set up airplane with a DX9. Airplane seems to have a high wing-loading, so mixed in some reflex (10 percent) on ailerons to deploy at low throttle. Any advice appreciated.

Mine is flown with a saito fa182 flat twin fourstroke and is nicely balanced fore and aft.All standard h9 kit fittings, nothing has fallen off yet.Mostly flown as an aerobatic plane and it looks very pretty doing that, will fly very slow with no bad habits.

Thank you - happy to hear it - although thinking the petrol single cylinder will never run as smoothly as a FA-182 twin.

I wasn't able to run the Zenoah yet - most likely due to incompetence and inexperience with gas burners - have a very sore stomach and shoulder from hand-propping. After some research here, these engines like to be wet when starting and I think that was part of my problem. Discovered upon de-fueling that the tank would not completely empty; suspecting clunk lodged or absent as I don't hear any movement in tank when handling airplane. Perhaps a blessing in disguise but shame on me for not heeding this sign earlier.
