Hi Guys -

I really appreciate all of your help! I found this online, which probably won't be nearly as fabulous of a book, but maybe just to give close up details sufficient for modeling it will be okay....

I am sure. I crashed one 2 years ago, but just finished the replacement. Those are the pics in this thread. I had the other one for 8 years. That flying site where the WBOTR was, is my flying field were I fly all the time. Today in fact! The WBOTR has moved to another site though, and will no longer be hosted by Love-air. Here is a pic of my first tripe flying at the WBOTR. Notice the little flags denoting where the pyro is.

I think we were there in '09. It is quite a drive up there but it was worth it! I just recently purchased a DR1 that was built about 5 years ago and am loving it so far. it flies sooooo good! Yours looks great. So nice seeing them in different colors than red! Mine is all black with white crosses. Video is posted on post 247.

Thanks for the compliments. One year we had 12 WW1 models in the air at once! There was a mid-air though unfortunately. A couple of Sopwiths I believe.

I am currently working hard on my other Fokker, the DVII, in preparation for the AMA scale Nats in July.

I am installing a new engine, and putting in some new radiator material I had 3d printed. Looking forward to flying this one again.

This thread has really gotten me excited about building one. I have a VK dr1 kit started but was missing a lot of pieces so I benched it. I went to my lhs to pick this kit up and he sold it the week before. I guess ai need to have him order one for me vthanks for all the tips, tricks and pics. Very informative.

I inherited a 70s vintage VK DR.1 kit partially built that suffered the same problem plus a few parts that were slightly petrified and unusable. I hope to finish it this winter.

i think we talked in that thread about the vk dr1. I got frustrated and shelved it and have been working on a 1/5 scale p-51 with a B conversion.
I hope you get yours finished.

If the VK kit is missing hardware you can probably still get the hardware from Proctor Enterprises. They still sell the VK kits. They are smaller than what is popular today but I quite enjoyed mine.

I asked this on another build thread as well; what did you use for assembly? Titebond, CA or other and why please. Thanks

There is still a picture of my triplane in "my gallery". It is hard to believe it was 13 years ago. IIRC I mostly used Titebond. It is definitely the way to go on the laminated parts. At the time it was kind of a point of pride that much of the model was made of bass, spruce and plywood. Thin CA is terrific for balsa but not always so great for the denser woods. Medium to thick CA will also work better than thin for this purpose. Does yours have the thin strips of basswood that mimic the fuselage bracing wires? I think I did use CA for those. Although it is thin on illustrations the manual has a lot of info. It may have a call out for all of the hardware. It is also helpful to study all of the plan sheets as there is information to be found there as well.

Addendum, I read the posts on the other thread and Foodstick pretty much has the scoop on how it is done with the BUSA kits. I have the N17 and that is how I went with that model. Bear in mind that the VK triplane was designed over 40 (maybe nearly 50) years ago.

On my VK it's Titebond II, with CA for tacking and epoxy. I have a sensitivity to regular CA so I use BSI Gold foam safe but sparingly so I don't develop a reaction to it too. I like the work time I get with Titebond II and I generally use a brush to apply it on larger areas. I like 15 or 30 minute epoxy for high stress areas.

I will also use some q tips to work glue around areas.... They go bad quick.. but they are cheap and you don't have to clean them...

i like to use titebond as well. I also use acid brushes like plumbers use for flux to apply the glue. Simply rinse it out in water and can be reused 100 times.

Default G26

I posted this in the other thread as well.
Does anyone have a g26 that could measure the width including muffler and carb? I cannot tell by online manual if it would fit in the Dr1cowl.
Thanks, Barry

Have you checked the length of the motor against the plans? If I recall that plane may have been designed for the G26.. Why I ask is two friends of mine built that whole plane and didn't realize they had a longer motor than the plans and the prop was 2- 3 inches in front of the cowl !

just thought I'd check on you.
Its amazing how fast you can build flat bottom wings, with no dihedral or ailerons !

Cool I have a 1/4 scale Dr 1 under construction and I have a Zenoah 26 for it. The engine is fine for this airplane. However it is alway better to check the engine size with the plans.

Default Engine length

the dr1 was designed for g23. The g26 sticks out may be a 1/4”-1/2”. Should be fine with no mods. So far the only thing I deviated on was adding blocks behind hinge points.
undecided if I want to go with ca or pin hinges. Designed for ca i believe. I did add shear webs to top wing as well. All theee wings are done except the strut supports mounts in all three. I started stick framing one side of fuse last night.
