Hi Guys, I managed to pick up my Joker :-) used in nice condition with a JC p100 in.

I will go off the CoG and settings/rates I’v read on here. It had two 2200 flight packs in but I will replace them as they only have the small servo type power wires. I have two new Optipower 3500mah with the larger gauge cable into better MPX connectors so I will use these. They are 140g each so a little heavier than the original ones used at 109g. But I would rather have the capacity and safety of the larger gauge cable. What size flight packs are people using on their models as I don’t really want to add any tail weight but there isn’t really much space to move things backwards.

Thanks Tom.

Too big. The std JR type connector into a Sensor Switch is good enough for 1000 flights in a CARF Flash/Ultra Flash so plenty for a Joker. 2 x 2200 2s Rx packs are good for 10-12 flights per charge.

Default Joker test fly!

Hi all,
it's with great happiness that 10 days ago I've finally test flown my Carf red scheme, JetCat P-100 Rx my case.

I love this sport jet, top quality, it flies beautifully, it's elegant and nice to see on the rwy, flying low and fast as well as doing elegant aerobatics!

My CG at 175mm with UAT full + 2cm of fuel in the main tank.

First flight little bit "twitchy" and sensible, for sure little bit nose heavy for the first 2-3 mins, after that much better. Some up trim needed.

From 2nd fly on I readuced throws and set the exp to my needs and all great, then flight after flight I'm getting better and better with handling and flying in general.

The jet flies so well, it really needs little "touchings" of thrust to keep it flying and keeping its necessary energy, extremely efficient jet, at the point that with some good aerobatics and nice flying I can fly 7+ mins no problems with more that 1/3 of fuel left in the main tank after touch down and even this really impressed me!

I can fly fast, I can fly quite slow and always with good stability feeling but readyness to react at the controls, a thing I love. Model's light and robust, I love those wing tips litfed up "almost-winglet-like" and I'm pretty convinced all that sensibly contribuites to model general efficiency.

Full flap landings, once understood correct attitude and approach speed, are a kiss.

It's a great sport jet even while on the ground, very practical and clever to be transported and mounted at the field, 2 M4 screws for main wing (I love single piece robust main wing), 2 M3 for the nose cose (3 LiPo packs there inside my case so super easy to charge the packs, just need the nose cone with with me!), refuel and fly!

Last but not least, my model(s) (and myself!) would not fly so well without Dave Wilshere priceless support and patience, always present and there to clarify my (often stupid) questions or doubts, this including live support few days ago on my Joker's JetCat new pump presetting of some ancillary parameters to make the starts reliable and perfect...and this happened while I was on my field rwy in Italy with model ready to be started up and flown and him being in UK...absolutely top quaity priceless support, based on Dave's wide huge and long time experience and expertise on the Joker, jets and rc modeling in general!. So, one more time, a big sincere thank you to you my friend Dave!

I wish you all to enjoy your Joker at least as much as I do!

Denis

So great to meet someone so excited about this brilliant hobby. You do with each model win 1st prize for most emails per build, but one day you will have all my knowledge and it will be silent again 😄
Your journey with the Joker is just beginning, you have so much more to discover about its good qualities, there is a sweet spot for balance and elevator expo, so do not be frightened of experimentation.
Last, your dog must ‘cook’ in Northern Italy heat!!

Dave,
I think you already know me pretty well so you know how much I love flying in general and how much I love rc flying too of course 😉

No, I won't never have your knowledge...so stay tuned 😂

My parents dog - Flash - is our "family squadron mascotte", often with us at the flying field and he loves jets, he's not scared by the noise (music) and yes, he also got someway used to our local hot/humid summer weather too😂

Oh yes, I love learning and experimenting with my models and in these first flights I'm indeed feeling there's a nice spot and balance with elev expo and throw and I'm getting used to this. I can fly the 7 mins beginning to end as a whole flight without feeling too much model balancing changing during the flight and it's all good.

I put a cockpit together. I made a Balsa floor that I glassed then added a vacuum formed tub and a pilot.
I still want to spray the canopy with a light coat of Tamiya clear orange.

Hi Guys, just getting mine ready for flights. I will go for the Cog of 175mm-180mm From the front leading edge where it meets the fues. Are people measuring the right way up/ not inverted? With roughly 2cm of fuel in the tank with the Uat full.

I will also go with the mentioned throws and 25-30% Expo. And the recommended flap mix by Dave.

First flight of 5mins on the timer I think to be safe.
Anything else worth mentioning?

Quite nervous again 😂
thanks Tom.

Should allow you to get a feel. Nothing to be worried about, you have down elevator with flap?

Built my Joker with a P100-RX after reading this thread. The engine is a great fit, and the jet is very fast, but I've had issues slowing it down. All of the fields available to me have relatively short asphalt runways. Seems a 100N is a good fit for a grass runway, where the extra power is useful for takeoff and the grass slows it down after touchdown, but the residual thrust at idle resulting in a high landing speed is a bit too much for landing within the confines of a 400' hardstand runway. My home field is unique in that the grass overrun at each end of our runway will rip the gear out of a jet. A problem we're trying to solve... We MUST land and stop on the asphalt. One bounce or a late touchdown and there's damage to the gear as it rolls into the grass. I'm sure a 100N is a great combo for many situations, but not mine. There's probably a good reason CARF recommends against installing a 100N in this jet. Ordered a Kingtech K-70G4 last night and will try that one in the Joker.
Just sharing my experience for anyone who may have a similar situation.

The P-100Rx has less residual thrust than the smaller KT turbines, so you need more flap. We operate from a 360’ grass strip and easily land on it. A few degrees extra flap makes a difference.

Thanks Dave. 1mm down mix with a small amount of flap. 4mm down with full Flap available for the P-100

I have no doubt I could fly my k100 powered Joker from a 400 foot runway. Watch my landing above in post 790. Its down and stopped in less than 400ft. Keep an eye on how much flap I have as I taxi back. It looks like alot of flap when seen in person but it handles it fine.

My issue is more about the less than perfect landings. One bounce or one long landing and it's gear repair time. My Boomerang Elan / P100 is never an issue at the same field. Of course it will slow to a brisk walk for landing. I routinely land the Joker on our 400' runway in it's current config, but the margin for error is zero. I'll give Dave's flap recommendation a try before swapping engines. Thanks for the comments!

I'll give it some more flap & test, Dave. Thanks. BTW, the VSpeak ECU converter with the Core radio is awesome! It's like having a GSU on your transmitter.

The Joker will touch down slower than any Elan I have flown. There is a well flown Elan P-100 set up at the meeting I’m at now and he definitely lands no slower than the Joker. There are two Jokers / P-100 JetCat due today both with low Jet hour pilots, I’ll try and record their landings.

P100 on mine, as per Dave suggestion and model example, and of course lot of thrust for such a light end efficient model, but I would stick on this engine if not alrerady having an 80N to use. Also, with good engine/energy managment, I can easily fly aerobatics and whatever I want and land after 7 to 7.5 min (take off to touch down time) with still 1/3 of main tank fuel. COnsuming maybe much less than if I had an 80N.

More, idle thrust with the P100 is fantastic and much better (less) than Wren 80 DCi idle thrust I feel on my Xcalibur while landing and this is of course a key factor for nice and precise approach and full flap landings.
