Rob, I just weighed it, 43 pounds

i did have to add 4 pounds to the nose to get her to balance. otherwise, 39 pounds. I am going to look up your weight to see how close I am to yours.

ok Rob, i see your was between 47 and 48 pounds.

What a dilemma!

mine is heavy, i think.

this is what I had to do:

purchased this from the local SCUBA diving shop/

i got several 1,2, and 3 pound lead weights.

I made this tray so that the weights can be fixed to the plywood tray.

this is the front end of the aircraft. Black zip ties. this is the area between the front former and the firewall for the DA 100 inline. I used a single 3 pound weight plus a 1 pound weight.

White Rose propeller washer, 6.6 ounces

it is balanced at the 6" mark with 4 pounds.

6" mark from root, using the EZ balancer

some interesting facts:
KOLM 230 inline, 3 cylinder = weight = 7770 grams = 17.12 pounds
DA 100 inline twin = 6.9 pounds

turns out my CG calculations were all wrong. I was measuring the CG way too forward, and thus, I made the airplane way nose heavy.

I shifted the CG, and now it is about 3/4" forward of the leading edge of the wing tube.

I removed all of the scuba diving weights, and then some more. Also removed the propeller washer.

the airplane weighs 38.5 pounds.

waiting on building up the nerves to do the maiden.

I also have run the motor on the ground and the baffling works great.

Temp A is the forward cylinder and Temp B is the rear cylinder.

What’s everyone using on the gear doors? Micro servo, linear servo/actuator? I like the look of the linear servos, but they all seem to be limited to 6v..

i used a standard HV servo , high torque

had to get creative in the area to install

ok, so today was supposed to be the day! LOL

went out and took my "practice" P-51

which is a CY models fiberglass P-51 with built up wings.

I planned to fly the CY models P-51 1st and do several flights to get enough nerve before I maiden the CARF P-51 GG

so then I take off and the CY models P-51 os flying great.
I come to make approach for the landing, landing gear come down
and mid flaps, I approached with 1/2 throttle, and that was way too much speed

so i immediately flipped the flaps off, and I guess the airplane lost lift quick and i powered up, but just as it did that, the airplane did a vigorous touch and go, with a prop strike

both gears were left at the location of the touch!! and now, the airplane was flying with a very unique sound and low power.

I was able to bring it around and plan on a belly land, so i was able to save it. time to redo the gear again, this will be the 3rd time.
2nd time on same wing.

SO once I put this one away,

I got the CARF all together and cranked the motor on
I then began to taxi the airplane on the runway, and noticed there was a major problem with the tail wheel.

SO i flip the airplane over, and began to inspect, and one of the cables broke!!!

SO now time to repair that.

I also noticed that the elevators were not working.

I had to go into device explorer and I saw that the output period was programmed to AUTO. Apparently this did not jive well with the elevator servos. Once I set the output period to 8 Msec, then the elevators were working.

I am glad I did not maiden it today.

I would recommend not using the cables that came with the CARF kit for the pull pull on the tail wheel.

enjoy the pictures!!

Carf P-51 Galloping Ghost, DA 100 inline

CY models P-51, DA 120, electric retracts. Practice airplane.

Just barely cleared the asphalt Taxi Way.

landed her so close to the fence!

this is where the "Touch & Prop Strike happened"

Really lucky, that could have resulted in a breakage

In setting up this airplane, what is consensus on the throws for the elevators and ailerons?

The manual for the P-51 (not the racer) states the following:

Aileron = 1/2" up and down

Elevator = 3/4" up and 1/2" down

Flaps = 15 degrees for take off
and 45 degrees for landing

Yesterday was finally the maiden!

What a fun day and this airplane flies great!!

I am using a DA 100 inline and still breaking it in.
Got 7400 rpm in the air and max front and rear cylinder head temps was 190 F, ambient temp for the day was 95 degrees Fahrenheit.

Take offs and landings were no where near as bad as I thought it was going to be. I guess the motor is not as torque-ee as the Kolms.

I think my mid flaps are not enough and my full flaps are too much.

Balance was excellent on maiden with very little trim required.

got three flights in and after the 2nd flight, I leaned in the front and rear High Speed needles, and it was still slightly rich, but ran way better.

A DA 100 inline probably not a powerhouse on this airplane, I do not believe the airplane is that fast. and Up-lines are not that vigorous. Definitely not a rocket! Not like you see with the KOLMS!!!

I may change the prop and put one in with slight more pitch, this may help increase the speed of the airplane.

I cannot wait to get it up in the air again!!

Congrats!!! looks really good.

i see you have a concrete runway, so: NOT YOUR FAULT :-)
Concrete runways and Mustang/Racer is pain. Many tried and failed. go on grass if possible or look for super hard tires to get a bit slip.
Cortex will also help a lot, use the second bank for start and land with heading on rudder.

your are right, your combination will not make a "bad ass" racer. most important thing is that you have fun with it!!

Cheers
Tom

thank you Tom,

I do have the cortex pro installed and it works very well.

I have ordered wheels from ROBART one year ago, but still no delivery!!

i just checked, and the prop is 27 x 10

so i will try next time two props, 27 x 12 and then 27 x 14 and see what happens and I will report back here.

have a great day.

I have the same setup in a Strega, I have about 4 flights on it and it seems slow to me using a 27X10 prop. love to find out how your prop testing is going and what your high needles end up at.

Thanks
