RE: TOM BRETT'S DESIGNS-UPDATE

I was googling for info on Tom Brett last night and came across this link, which some may find interesting (about mid-way down).

RE: TOM BRETT'S DESIGNS-UPDATE

Hey, I've got one of those spinners. It needs a new home.

RE: TOM BRETT'S DESIGNS-UPDATE

That sure looks like the LE and TE are straight in those photos. Where do you get 3 different angles?

RE: TOM BRETT'S DESIGNS-UPDATE

Duane,

Ray's using the correct terminology. A good model aircraft aerodynamics book will go a good deal toward explaining how these things work. Martin Simon's book will help tremendously. He...

RE: TOM BRETT'S DESIGNS-UPDATE

That would be my guess. Notice the faint construction lines ("construction" in the drafting sense, not building the model) extending out to the tip, and the apparent extensions at the tip to help...

RE: TOM BRETT'S DESIGNS-UPDATE

Duane,

We engineers keep a log book of EVERYTHING we do. Our employers need it in case of a patent (to show as early a date as possible, or to show "prior art" when contesting another's...

RE: TOM BRETT'S DESIGNS-UPDATE

I think the first one is cross sections for the tapered rudder. The ailerons and elevator appear to be pretty close to constant chord. The rudder is the only surface with great chord changes.

RE: TOM BRETT'S DESIGNS-UPDATE

The larger area spreads out the shock into a larger section of the fuselage, enhancing the life expectancy of the plane by reducing the strain in any one area, and potentially allowing it to be...

RE: TOM BRETT'S DESIGNS-UPDATE

Willie is right on the toe-in. It keeps you tracking straight more easily. Otherwise, it will tend to zoom off in one direction or another with the nose off the ground and insufficient rudder...

RE: TOM BRETT'S DESIGNS-UPDATE

At normal flying speeds I would expect it to be rock solid. The sweep will ensure that. It will also come out of a hammerhead with very little wobble (the wobble would still occur, but it should be...

RE: TOM BRETT'S DESIGNS-UPDATE

Hi Duane,

You really need Martin Simons book. For $25 from Carstens and a few hours of reading, you'll gain a HUGE wealth of info that will make all kinds of sense of what you see looking at...

RE: TOM BRETT'S DESIGNS-UPDATE

Capping the fin like that will make it more effective, but at low speeds/high alpha the elevator and stab will be blanked (google for Boeing 707 stall videos). The wing sweep will allow high alpha...
