RE: Top Flite 1/7 P-51 Build

I've kinda given up on mine. Trying to make a scale looking undercarriage for this kit has just drained me.

I really wish I'd just bought Brian Taylor plans instead :(

RE: Top Flite 1/7 P-51 Build

Haha I knew it was too easy..... :D

The P38 is just a tiddler.......52" span - I fancied a break from the complex models for a while.

This thing is one of Gordon Whitehead's plans. It was a...

RE: Top Flite 1/7 P-51 Build

Hi guys,

Still looking in from time to time. I haven't done any work on the Mustang all summer [:o]

I got distracted and have been building this little thing instead:

RE: Top Flite 1/7 P-51 Build

:D That was what I originally did too.......

It was then I realised the kit u/c geometry was all wrong, so I changed the blown up plan as neccessary to make them work as best I could. The inner...

RE: Top Flite 1/7 P-51 Build

Well fiddle sticks as polite old ladies say in Britain.....................

It's just dawned on me that the u/c geometry is miles off scale on this model too. The wheels end up in the scale...

RE: Top Flite 1/7 P-51 Build

Welcome Claude :D

I'm supposed to be a builder too! I haven't done much work on mine recently though - I seem to have lost momentum! [:o]

On the plus side, I have been busy working on the...

RE: Top Flite 1/7 P-51 Build

HI Ticketec.

Haven't touched the Mustang for a couple of weeks as I've been working on my full size project.

To answer your gear door question though, I simple applied solarfilm (like...

RE: Top Flite 1/7 P-51 Build

Just laid up a fibreglass moulding of my centre lower wing skin. Idea is that I'll cut the gear doors out of it once it's cured. Never done it before though and I don't think I've got enough cloth...

RE: Top Flite 1/7 P-51 Build

I've had both set ups too and definately find the rigging much easier with two servos.

I actually prefer more inertia in my models contrary to the comments above about better flying with a...

RE: Top Flite 1/7 P-51 Build

Funny that. The plans say a 1.1/4" tailwheel but show a 1.3/4" and thats what I have fitted.......... Mine goes about 1/2" through F11!

RE: Top Flite 1/7 P-51 Build

Sand it smooth, get it as near perfect as you can get. The glass is only really there to toughen the wood up and give a hard finish to work on with fillers and paint etc.

Asphalt252 - did you...

RE: Top Flite 1/7 P-51 Build

Thooper!

Even the retractable tailwheel is causing modifications. The retract horn on the tailwheel routes right through the kit's intended Elevator pushrod.

Beginning to wish I'd built...

RE: Top Flite 1/7 P-51 Build

Hi guys.

First of all - no pics yet. I ended up taking my T-Bolt apart instead of putting the Mustang together!!! Doh!

Second - I am indeed putting a full cockpit in (it's about 3/4"...

RE: Top Flite 1/7 P-51 Build

Ticketec - if you look at the Top Flite Seafury build on this forum you'll find pics of someone's Seafury with servo operated gear doors. I like that setup and intend to copy it to some extent [8D]

RE: Top Flite 1/7 P-51 Build

I've got a Robart tailwheel ready (in fact it's sitting on the plans layed out on my living room floor - best sort that out before the wife gets home!!) to build in. I haven't actually done it yet,...

RE: Top Flite 1/7 P-51 Build

You can use the Robart 606HDs to account for some dihedral, but I found that with my retracts (CJM) that by the time I'd modified the mounts to get the wheels inside the wing, I'd pretty much removed...

RE: Top Flite 1/7 P-51 Build
