If the razor plane is chipping the balsa, it's taking too big of a bite. Loosen the screw and back the blade back into the plane - just a small adjustment, then retighten the screw. Now try it...

When I was building this kit last year, I used a razor plane. You just plane the balsa blocks to their rough shape and then finish sanding them to their final shape. It made quick work of removing...
