I thought that was the case: the 80 inchers have the strut in front of the retract unit, the 60 inchers have conventional strut in the middle retracts. It would be great to have the same style for...

I had spring down/air ups (robart, bought from spring air) in a TF 1/7 P-51 kit, and they were nothing but trouble. Part of the problem was Robart's crummy valves, but I believe gear should be...

BigTee: unless you build really, really light, use a 90 2 stroke minimum. They are under powered even with a 75. Also, get yourself a GYA 430 rudder gyro to help tame that mad left turn on...

I used Futaba S3305s on the rudder and elevator. They're not much more expensive than standards, and have the advantage of higher torque and metal gears.

RE: Top Flite 1/7 P-51 Build

MHO on oleo struts is that they are too heavy and too expensive, BUT, adapting the Robart struts to the wire ones on the Eflites is probably the best compromise.

The main reason for this is that...

RE: Top Flite 1/7 P-51 Build

Have you looked at the Eflite 60-120 size electric retracts?

I've used the smaller ones, and had good results.

Kinda pricey, but I hate pneumatic even more than you do, if that's...

RE: Top Flite 1/7 P-51 Build

I built the 1/7 P-51 Gold Edition kit, and lost it to a snap and unrecoverable spin. I've found the ARF to be much better designed and behaved.

RE: Top Flite 1/7 P-51 Build

That's a shame, Mike.

Were you turning left or right at the time it happened?

RE: Top Flite 1/7 P-51 Build

Pretty bird, Mike. Nice job.

I ran your e power specs across ecalc. Have you done that?

Thrust wise you'll be fine - almost 11 pounds. Speed is a little slow, tho, about 54 mph. These...

RE: Top Flite 1/7 P-51 Build

Making another wing, with retracts, for my TF P-51 is one of my winter "refurbishment" projects. (I flew it all summer with fixed gear, and really enjoyed it. The factory supplied retracts were...

RE: Top Flite 1/7 P-51 Build

Riddle's post reminds me of something I take for granted- an accurate voltmeter. There aren't many of them out there. I have an old one from my working days, and because of it, have had no need for...

RE: Top Flite 1/7 P-51 Build

George:

The only personal experience I have with 2.4 is the Futaba 6EX systems, and I've found them to be bullet proof. The Spektrum stories are from other guys, many of which are posted on a...

RE: Top Flite 1/7 P-51 Build

Geez, George, that's really sad.

Something to think about: I have seen maybe 20 accounts of problems like this with Spectrum 2.4G. I have seen one with Futaba FAAST, and have had no problems...

RE: Top Flite 1/7 P-51 Build

It's difficult to tell from the pic, but you might want to enlarge your exhaust hole. Mine was a bit larger than that, and I didn't have a pitts muffler that restricted some of it. (It looks like...

That figures out to 33 oz per square foot, without fuel. Stall speed will be 25 mph or above, depending on altitude. Don't make the mistake I made with mine- believing all that...

If your plane really weighs only 4 kg dry (8.8 pounds), it's lighter than any of the TF 1/7 birds I've heard of, and should fly really well with that engine and prop. Mine weighed...

Mine came in at 12 pounds, with air retracts and an OS 120 AX, and very little in the way of scale additions. Covered with ultra cote.

RE: Top Flite 1/7 P-51 Build
