RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Have a happy Hobbsy.
I look forward to doing that again someday. I ran engines and made music all by my self yesterday.
My wife now has two swings in the shaded area where we ran the engines with a concrete patio.

Hobbsy,
Happy Birthday!
I one time heard someone say that life is what happens to you while you are trying to figure out what you want to do when you grow up.
It certainly is and it certainly does.
Sounds as if your's has been well-lived. (Not to imply that there is not a lot left)
Nothing like a nice family, bikes and Saitos!
P.S.: This is probably a good time for a big "Thank You" to you, w8ye, the late WR, and others, for all the good information you fellows contribute to this thread. It has been a big help to me and I am certain to many others.

I lost count as to what number member I would be [8D] but I've got a Saito 1.80 in my Cessna and it's turning a APC 17x8 and some times a APC 17x10

I am rebuilding an early style 30 with the cast open rockers. I bought it as a basket case. It is missing a nut, the one that secures the rocker arm pivot screw. I can easily replace it with a standard 3mm nut but I would prefer a Saito nut because it is unique in its shape.
I also need the teflon washers (4) that go on the sides of the rocker arms.
Anyone got these parts they can sell? [sm=tongue_smile.gif]

Once you have uploaded pics (it will tell if they upload successfully), click ok. Then click ok below message box to send message-the same as if just posting a reply, etc.
RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
A week ago I posted some questions regarding a 50 that had been given to me. The engine seemed to have a modified backplate and was missing some parts. You guys were kind enough to point me in the right direction, including pictures, so I could figure out just what i had. Turns out a prior owner had tried to adapt an 80 carb onto a 50 and had never finished the job.
I wanted to run the engine before investing in parts to make it whole. So I temporarily robbed the backplate, carb, intake tube, and exhaust pipe from my FA-45 (yes, all that fit just fine). Today I ran the engine and it does very well. I think the valves were a bit sticky before running, because compression seemed to come and go. I gave it good a dose of Marvel Mystery oil into every opening before running to loosen things up, but maybe there was some congealed oil on the valve seats. Anyway, after a short run the compression came up to what it should be and now it's just another sweet running Saito.
Thanks again to all the guys who helped with their comments, part numbers, Horizon Hobble links, and copies of the manual.
Another engine that came into my hands with the 50 is an 80. The 80 is complete, but the header pipe looks like it may be glued in with J. B. Weld. Is there a problem with stripped exhaust port threads in the head? I'm reluctant to try removing the pipe for fear I'll make it worse.

Hi OTRCMAN,
Glad that things worked out on that 50 for you. That's good to hear.
I really can't comment on the .80 header threads, but my comment is that, if it does turn out to be stripped threads, perhaps Clarence Lee could fix that for you. He does stripped out glow plug threads, and he might have a trick up his sleeve to repair these metric threads as well... just a thought.
I'm sure that you'd prefer not to have to put any $$ into it at all, but if you do, Clarence might be a nice option for you. It'll be interesting to read what others have to say about your 80 and the JB Welded header.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
I'm looking at the Saito 325 radial for a future project. I need to know if it will fit in my cowl. Would any of you Saito officianados have the meausurement from the prop hub to the cylinder heads?
Thanks, in advance.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Thanks, but Bob was asking about the diameter. I'm looking for, front to back, the distance from the prop hub to the front of the cylinder heads.
The link provided did not include that information.
Thanks for trying to help.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Here are some pics of my FUN day at the field. The Saito 82 was buried in the mud. It broke off a valve cover, lost push rod, broke rocker arm mount, and dented intake tube. I sent it of to Horizon Service center for repairs. They should recieve it tomorrow. I bought a GP Venus to replace this Lark 70. I liked the way the Lark flew. but it was not the easiest plane to build.

Regarding the .80 with a glued-in exhaust pipe:
The engine also has scratchy bearings presumably corrosion. I think I will replace the bearings and then run the engine. If the glued-in header stays in place under heat I'll just leave it alone. If it falls out (I won't be surprised) then something will have to be done.
Thanks for the Clarence Lee suggestion. He certainly has a great reputation for competent and responsible work.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Regarding the dimension of the 325 from the back of the prop to the cylinder . . .
From looking at the Saito 325 manual in the link above, it gives a dimension of 100 mm from the prop flange to the C/L of the cylinder.
I measure 27mm from the C/L of the cylinder to the front of the valve cover. Therefore the dimension you are looking for is
73mm
RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Well i have been looking at prop hubs. And i was wondering what prop hub would work on the Saito .72 GK engine. I have a tru turn spinner for it and the apprpriate adapter for 2 balde props. i was going to try a 3 blade Gruapner prop i have on it. I ordered a 3 blade spinner for the engine but it's to small for the prop. so i thought i would try a prop hub instead. So i can use the starter on it. But have never messed with a prop hub And wouldnt want to make another mistake and get something just to find out it wont work.
A little uncertain about prop hubs since the saitos have that Jam nut to ensure that the prop doesn't come loose. But i think i have seen some pics on here were others have used a prop hub. can anyone give me a link or suggest a prop hub that would work good on this enigne.
Thanks

Here's the lock nut. it goes behind the hub

Heres the hub which is &/8" in diameter for the starter
