RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
I decided today was a PlayDay and ran my Saito 1.00 on Davis Diesel Fuel. The 1.00 started with no glow assist at all. Engine==== Saito 1.00 GK
Fuel Davis Diesel ABC mix
Prop===MasterAirscrew Classic 18x6
RPM at full throttle=====6,650
Idle===1,000 rpm
Kinda surprising for a stone stock engine. My old high compression .80 has too much compression and sounds like a black and gold grenade at anything over 5,500 with a 14x8.

Hey there! I am really new to this hobby, doing a ARF Pawnee build now, plan to use a Saito. I am commenting on the human interactions between R/C's with God's most beautiful creations.. eagles, hawks, falcons. I am an old fart too, and was raised in the high mountains of Colorado where eagles and hawks soar endlessly on thermals, then stoop at incredible speed to attack a prey animal, or, fight for territory in the sky. Now I live in Kansas where this is an abundance of beautiful redtail hawks. I used to fly an ultralight airplane and enjoyed being "up there" with the birds... until I had one that actually attacked the flimsly ultralight several times. I was encroaching on his domain, and clearly he let me know it... I bugged out, but it was a cool interation, if not a bit scary. Unforgetable experience. Beyond the enjoyment of flying gas/nitro rc's, I am also hoping to use an electric powered glinder to soar with these birds. ... perhaps play with them... and hope to not run afowl with regulations that prohibit "harrassing wildlife" in our country. Long term project idea is to flim these gorgeous birds up close with r/c aircraft. I wonder if anyone else has done that?
Have fun!
Carl

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Okay Saito experts, I need a little help. I bought a Nosen Aeronca Champ with a Saito 130 twin that appears to be barely broken in. It has two glow plugs per cylinder and, of course, two carburetors. The low end seemed really rich and I've leaned each LSN about 3/4 of a turn. The transition to wide open throttle is much more crisp but it acts like I need to go further. What's the best procedure for peaking the high speed needles? Should I start the engine on one cylinder and peak it and then shut down and repeat the process with the other cylinder? I find it very difficult to set both cylinders simultaneously. I managed to run through three tanks of fuel today but had to land deadstick at least six times. Should I install onboard glow? Any advice will be welcome and appreciated.
Thanks,
Paul

Start the engine on both cylinders by heating only the rear plugs
Warm up the engine and peak each cylinder. Go back and forth a couple times. Do it the same way for low speed except you are checking for the leanest you can get the cylinder and it still transition to high speed. If the cylinder went out on acceleration, you have that cylinder too lean

My thought was that I'd have to apply a little glow heat to start it but it just fired up instantly. I just wish someone would come up with a way to adjust the compression a little. Most folks think model Diesels have higher compression than glow engines but that is not true. My Saito .80 actually has too much compression for Diesel operation.

Oil blowing out the breather on a Saito
Often, this is the result of running the engine too rich. - The needle valves need to be leaned out some and typically it is the Kiw speed one that is at fault.
There are times that the ring gap is too great and there is too much piston blow-by on the engine causing excessive oil in the crankcase

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
this engine only has 1 gallon thru it and ive got it leaned out and it runs great and sips the fuel. The motor has great compresion too, just weird.THe motor is one a stick and i run a tube on the breather. Should i be able to feel air going in and out of the tube when i crank it by hand? My other saitos dont have this problem

Oh - can I get in on this, too?
2 SA72's, 2 SA80's.
Thanks,

That is very interesting. Where's the advantage, cheaper fuel? More torque? As for lowering the compression I would take a look at making a shim for under the cylinder. That should be fairly easy to do unless you get involved with having to lengthen the pushrods, PR tubes, intake tube etc. depending on the thickness of the shim needed.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Good Afternoon , I am installing a Saito .72 in a Sig Kadet Sr. ARF, it has a 10.8 oz. fuel tank, what sort of flight time should I look for? I will be using this as my trainer so mostly low speed flights. Also would like to know if a glow driver is recomended? Thanks.. Bob J.
